Zen,

Just ask away; whatever I can do to help, I will do.

In which state are you located?

Zen,

One bottle of lead absorption isn't likely to do any damage--geez, if I thought about all the lead I may have swallowed years ago I'd likely be speaking Latin...

I don't think capsules as we know them would have ever been anything like a secondary fail-safe, especially since they never fit tight around the neck.

As to your PS, the regulations will likely kill the idea, but that of course depends on where you set up the business. Each state has its own set of corruption, I mean, rules.
The ones that would really get you are probably health department codes and those that deal with consumers and open containers.

PS, There was what seemed to be the beginning of an upstart franchise chain of shops of which I visited the first two storefronts in the former East Germany back in '99, called 'vom Fass' meaning literally, 'from the cask'-- you could buy cheaper or fancier glass bottles at the store besides bringing your own-- everything from rum & brandy to olive oil & I forget what else...
I want to make wine to help fund & support a network of wired cafes focusing on immigrant populations & their culture...& my French restaurateur friend reminded me of trying to set it up like this..I fear the regulatory rigamarole I'll be faced with...

Thomas,
what might the risk for lead absorption be from the contents of a bottle of '77 Rausan-Ségla where the cork somehow weirdly was sucked in (tropical heat?)
& the well-sealed capsule was the only barrier keeping the wine from pouring out of the laid down bottle?
Corks are vulnerable to temperature & humidity, I believe the capsule must have been developed as a secondary, fail-safe mechanism...I believe the capsule substituted a bit of wax seal over the cork?
Just discovered you thanks to Tom Warks' blog. Glad to see somebody tackling wine-related issues from a more clearly ethical standpoint.
